MEDICAID MYTHS
Medicaid Myth #1: "I have Medicare and it will pay my nursing home bill." Many people mistakenly believe that Medicare pays the cost of nursing home care. It is true that Medicare provides a short-term rehabilitation benefit that pays up-to 100 days in the nursing home, but after that you're on your own unless you have long-term care insurance or unless you qualify for Medicaid.
Medicaid Myth #2: "The nursing home I would want to go to doesn't take Medicaid." Although there are a few exceptions, virtually every nursing home accepts Medicaid.
Medicaid Myth #3: "Private pay patients get better care." Federal and state law prohibit nursing homes from discriminating based on how residents pay the bill. In practice, no one in the nursing home knows how you pay the bill.
Medicaid Myth #4: "If I go to a nursing home, I must spend all my money before I get Medicaid." Poeple that don't get help often make this myth come true, but those who do get help can generally preserve some funds to pay for the things that are not covered by Medicaid. In some cases we can provide other protection. We hesitate to say how much can be protected in individual cases because everyone's situation is different and we would need to evaluate your facts before telling you what we can do.
Medicaid Myth #5: "It's too late to do anything." The answer is that is almost never too late to do anything. Of course, the longer you wait, the less we can do because you've probably already spent money we could have helped you protect. Also, some things we might do for you take time and the less time you give us, the fewer options we have on the table. Having said that, we can usually help you even if you are already in a nursing home. Call us today at (706) 428-0888 and let us tell you how we can help!!

In that regard, "Elder Law" is a field where attorneys may be certified as specialists in Tennessee; Mr. McGuffey is Certified as an Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation and as an Elder Law Specialist by the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization. The Georgia Bar Association does not currently certify attorneys as specialists.
